Never Forget
On this 10 year anniversary of the attack on our country and the loss of so many lives, I find myself lost in thought ... pictures and memories flashing through my mind. Remembering where I was, the somber day at work, watching the news all day long, and how many people I knew had lost loved ones in the Towers and on that Pennsylvania field.
I try to fight back the tears as I explain the tragic day to my 8 year old son. I briefly talked about 9/11 when the news broke earlier this year that Osama bin Laden was killed. I tried to explain as best I could to a small child why the American people were so happy that a man was dead. We looked at brief video clips on YouTube so he could see the plane crashing into the Twin Towers. I heavily monitored what he saw, as I only wanted him to see what he needed to understand the capacity of how many people died because of this man.
Today, we talk more in depth about 9/11 and I find myself trying to sugar-coat the events of that day. Why? Is it it because I want to shelter him, make him feel safe ... or because it is so painful to talk about?
Explaining the famous picture of the three firefighters lifting the American Flag out of the rubble brought me to tears. Watching the footage play on the news today gave me chills. My life forever changed on that fateful day, as did the lives of all Americans.
I will never forget.
I will always remember.
I will always be proud to be an American.
God Bless America.
