The Day My Laptop Crashed
It is the reason we all backup our pictures, but really, that is just a precaution, because like I said, it will never happen to me.And then the day comes when you turn on your computer, your trusted friend who has been there for you day and night, the one who got you through so many college papers, and they greet with you a black screen. Not the award-winning picture of a tiger you expect to see, just a black screen. No icons, nothing.Yes, this happened to me.I can’t even begin to tell you how may times I tried turning the computer on and off. Taking out the battery and putting it back in, thinking surely this would fix the problem. To my dismay, nothing was working. The hard drive was gone. Ka-put. Nada. And my life was quickly spiraling out of control. How would I write? How would I edit all the photos I had uploaded from my camera?Oh no, my photos?Wait. Yes. I had just done a full back up 3 days prior. My photos were safe. This was almost three weeks ago. Three long weeks of limited social media and basically no photography. Sure, I could access Facebook and Twitter from my iPhone, but it just wasn’t the same. I have a Chromebook, which I love, but it just isn’t the same. Since it was the only working computer, Dylan pretty much had it all the time for his school work and games. I know, the sacrifices we make as parents are rough.Ironically, after a week or so I wasn’t really missing social media like I thought I would. I was actually enjoying the break. It was nice not to worry about deadlines and scheduled posts. Nice not to think about writers block or whether or not people would even read the post I was writing. The only problem was I really missed my photography. I missed seeing my pictures in Lightroom. It wasn’t that I missed posting them to Facebook or sharing them on Twitter, what I missed was the photography itself. To me, photography is not a competition. It is not about being the first to get the shot. Photography is an art form – a creative outlet that has become part of me.Today my new computer arrived. The first new computer I have had since Dylan was born. Once the basics had been set up and the internet connection established, I had one very important thing to download. I felt a sense of joy come over me as I double-clicked that little icon. Lightroom was back. Oh, how I missed her.Moral of the story… the day my laptop crashed may have been a blessing in disguise. I learned that the art of photography itself is more important to me than sharing the pictures on social media. Sure, I love having people like my pictures, I would be lying if I said that I didn’t, but there is so much more to life than how many likes a picture gets on Facebook. So friends, back up your photographs on an external hard drive …because this can happen to you. -
Seeing the world through a photographic lens
Now that I am not doing a million different things, I have found the time to enjoy a hobby of mine – photography. I have always liked taking pictures, what mom doesn’t like taking pictures of her kid? Aside from birthdays, holidays, and documenting family outings, I didn’t really think much about my subjects.
After a few tips from friends and spending some time learning what my new camera can actually do, I have discovered that I’m not all that bad of a photographer. As much as I love taking pictures of my son, my favorite things to photograph are really flowers, animals, and anything nature. I love capturing the details in a flower that so often go unnoticed and the personality of an animal that can speak volumes about a species.
Since taking the time to focus on my hobby, I see the world in a different way. I find myself pulling over on the side of the road or stopping mid-stride because I notice the way the light is hitting something. I look up more than before and see the depth of the trees – the beauty of the clouds.
I am going to read some books on photography that another friend recommended to learn more and then when I feel confident, I am going to buy a “real camera”. I love the Cannon that I have and it takes decent pictures, but imagine what I could do with a Cannon Rebel.
I just can’t justify the cost until I am a better photographer – but who knows, the camera might make me a better photographer! What is your favorite subject to photograph?
Connect with me on Flickr – I would love to see your photographs.

Just Another Sunday Morning
I love Sunday mornings. We get to sleep in, relax and enjoy the quiet morning together. Each of us has our own way of starting the day. I of course need to have my coffee, usually because I have pulled an all nighter writing a paper for school … or in the case of last night, was up til 1 am decorating a cake for a friends birthday.

Happy New Year!
As I sit here in the quiet, drinking my coffee at 10:00 am, I am reminding myself how lucky Dylan and I are. Sure, 2009 was a tough year … but we also had some great things happen. I went back to school in January to get my Bachelors degree in Psychology; I got a new job with the NMUSD in February; Dylan started 1st grade; we have a nice apartment (finally furnished the way we want it); got to spend 2 weeks in Hawaii this summer; made numerous trips to Disneyland, Sea World, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and Legoland (phew, thank God for annual passes); survived the Swine Flu; and lastly had a wonderful Christmas.
New Year’s Eve was a quiet night at home, with all of Dylan’s favorite New Year munchies; that is until he ran outside at midnight yelling as loud as he could! Dylan stayed up until 2 am with me last night to ring in the new year, which is the only reason he is still sleeping, and today we are going to relax and enjoy the day. I have never been good with New Year resolutions, so this year I will keep it simple. Love my child the best I can, play with my child in childlike ways, continue to do my best in school, and keep up with this blog on a regular basis!
Welcome 2010, and to all of our friends and family we wish you a safe, healthy, and prosperous year!

Where does the time go?
I must apologize to those of you that actually read our blog. Things have been so crazy since the holidays; I haven’t had any time to sit and write. I will try to give a quick recap and make time to update this blog on a regular basis again!
Dylan has been doing great in school. I swear he has a photographic memory. He is reading books to me ~ WOW and his writing is getting so good. My little boy is growing up so fast! In his free time he still enjoys animals, but has discovered Webkinz and spends much time on the computer with them (he now has 28, thanks to Grandma and Mom)
As for myself, I went back to school in January to get my Bachelors in Psychology. Then, in late February I finally received the phone call I had been waiting for from the NMUSD ~ yes, I got the job!! I now work full-time at Ensign Intermediate School running the ASB office, book weddings on the weekends, do school work at night, and somehow fit being a mom into my schedule too. The best part is that I will now have all school holidays and summers off with Dylan!

After waiting all year long and hearing at least 100 times that Santa is watching you so you had better be good … he was finally coming! The cookies were ready for Santa, the note had been written and the magic key was on the front door. All that was left to do was read Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Gingerbread Babies Play
Dylan’s kindergarten class performed The Gingerbread Babies play this year for all the parents and grandparents. Dylan had the lead role as Mattie, the boy who saved the gingerbread babies from being eaten. He was so proud of himself as were all of his family.
